Abstract
Primary chronic venous disease is the result of increased venous hypertension caused mostly by abnormal venous reflux. Changes in the haemodynamics of veins are transmitted to the microcirculation, resulting in capillary alteration (microangiopathy) leading to edema. Treatment of varicosity can correct venous reflux and macrocirculation, but the influence on the edema could be indirect and incomplete. Therefore patients may benefit from conservative measures such as compression, exercise, venoactive drugs.
